Frequently Asked Questions
Our Heritage & Winemaking
What makes Georgian wine unique?
Georgia is the birthplace of viticulture, with an 8,000-year uninterrupted winemaking history. Unlike conventional methods, traditional Georgian wine is fermented naturally in a Qvevri—a large clay vessel buried underground. This ancient technique regulates temperature and preserves the pure, natural profile of the grapes.
What is the story behind Ikano Estate?
Ikano Estate was founded by twenty friends from eleven different countries, united by a shared vision to elevate Georgian wine. Our winery is built on 2nd-century ruins at the historic Nelkarisi estate, blending ancient heritage with modern precision.
What is Amber wine?
Amber wine is crafted by fermenting white grapes with their skins and stems in a traditional Qvevri. This extended contact creates a robust texture that drinks more like a light red than a standard white.
Are Ikano wines natural?
Yes. Our Qvevri-aged wines undergo natural fermentation without synthetic additives. The buried clay vessels naturally clarify and stabilize the wine, resulting in a pure, unmanipulated expression of the vintage.
